Believe it or not, Kia is the oldest automotive manufacturer in Korea, but it didn’t get its start on four wheels.
The Kyungsung Precision Industry was founded in 1944 and got its start producing bicycles and motorcycles. The company unveiled its first bicycle in 1952 and officially renamed itself Kia Industries. Over the next several decades, Kia produced motorcycles and trucks for Honda and Mazda before debuting their first car, the Brisa, in 1974. During this time, Kia continued producing vehicles for other automakers before rising political tension in the country forced Kia to focus its efforts on producing trucks in the early 1980s.
Producing around 95,000 vehicles in 1985, Kia’s production quickly came to a halt and led the Korean automaker to partner with Ford. Kia produced models like the Ford Aspire and Festiva as well as several Mazdas for the American market. Eventually, Kia made its way to American soil in 1992 with the launch of Kia Motors America. Since Kia was entirely unknown in the American automotive industry, it started small with its first models sold in four dealerships in Portland, Oregon. Over the next three years, the automaker slowly expanded to dealerships across the United States.
